ELIXIR EMERGENCY MEDICAL BRACELETS
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Q: WHO SHOULD WEAR THESE BRACELETS
A: Everyone should be wearing an emergency identification
piece.
1. Especially, if you have a medical
condition.
2. If you suffer from Diabetes, Alzheimer’s
etc.
3. Allergies (beestings, shellfish,
penicillin, morphine, iodine, and many others)
4. Heart conditions, Transplant patients
5. If you are on a medical aid. Ensure you are
taken to the correct medical facility.
6. Or simply for Identity purposes (Especially
Children)
Q. WHAT DOES MY BRACELET DO?
A: They alert any medical
officer, or whoever is attending the patient, that he/she has a medical
condition that needs to be taken into account prior to any treatment being
administered.
Q: HOW DO THEY DO THIS?
A: Each bracelet and necklace
is pre-engraved with the emergency call centre telephone number, together with a
unique disc number. In an emergency, the attendant simply phones the emergency
number and quotes the disc number to the operator. The operator will enter the
disc number on his computer and his screen will display all the patients’
personal details as well as all his medical information, including medical
condition, allergies and medication. Once at hospital any nurse/doctor can log
onto the website
www.elxmed.com and enter the disc number they
will then be given a full medical report. They will then be in a position to act
correctly. If further information is required they can call the call centre for
full personal details.
Q: WHO IS THIS EMERGENCY CALL CENTRE?
A: The
emergency call centre is provided by Chubb security services. Chubb are the
largest security organisation in South Africa
and their call centre provides Elixir with 24 hour monitoring of all the wearers
of Elixir emergency products, for 365 days of the year. This is the most
expensive aspect of the Elixir operation and without Chubb, Elixir would be
forced to charge patients a monthly fee for monitoring. The service is provided
by Chubb, free of charge, as a service to the community.
Q: HOW DOES CHUBB GET THE INFORMATION?
A: Each bracelet or necklace is
supplied in a clear plastic envelope. Inside the envelope is an information
sheet that must be filled in by the patient. This form contains all the
information required and when completed, must be faxed to Elixir on the fax
number that appears on the same form (0860 103 684). You can also go to the
REGISTER YOUR DISC page. On receipt of the form, Elixir will capture the
information on their computers once captured this information will be instantly
available on the World Wide Web. This happens within 48 hours. Generally, the
pharmacy, will, as a service, fax the form for the patient.
Q: HOW IS THIS INFORMATION SENT TO CHUBB?
A: The I.T. management of all
wearers of Elixir pieces (data transmission, e-mail and our website) is done by
South Africa On Line, better known as saol.com. This service is also provided
free of charge by SAOL as service to the community.
Q: WHAT DOES THE RANGE CONSIST OF
A: The bracelets are available
for ladies and gents. The only difference between the two is the length of the
chain. The necklaces are hung on a 60 cm chain. Elixir manufactures only two
different bracelets.
An Emergency Bracelet or Necklace a Diabetic Bracelet or
Diabetic Necklace
It is vital that you understand the concept fully
Generally, Elixir does not believe in engraving exact
medical conditions on the disc Because of the limited space available. More
often than not, it is impossible to fit everything on the disc and something
will have to be left off. This omission could prove fatal. Elixir therefore
wants, as far as possible, to force the attending medical officer to phone the
call centre and quote the disc number, or log onto the website
www.elxmed.com and enter the disc number. They will then be given a full
medical report. They will then be in a position to act correctly.
1. The emergency bracelet or necklace is engraved as
follows

Please note there is an international
number that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. All new
Discs will also be engraved with the Patient Portal address
www.elxmed.com
2. The diabetic bracelet or
necklace is engraved as follows

Diabetics are a special category of
patient because they can, and often do, fall into a diabetic coma that if
recognised, can quickly be treated with sugar water. Thereafter, the call centre
can be contacted for any other information that may be required.
Q: WHAT ARE THESE PRODUCTS MADE
OF AND WHAT DO THEY COST?
A: All the pieces are available
in:
Stainless steel bracelets
R 130.00
Stainless steel Velcro bracelets
R 130.00
Sterling silver bracelets R
270.00
9 Carat gold bracelets R 2330.00
Q: WHAT ABOUT MAINTENANCE OF THE PIECES
A: The perception that
engraving is forever is not correct, in time it will wear off and become
illegible. This will render the piece “Useless”. Elixir levies an annual
subscription of R 49.00 from the second year (there is no admin charge for the
first year). This entitles the wearer to receive a wallet card providing the
same detail as the bracelet and a windscreen sticker alerting officials that the
owner subscribes to Elixir emergency service. In addition, the wearer is
encouraged to check his bracelet regularly for any defects and every two years
is entitled to return the piece to Elixir for complete refurbishing totally free
of charge.

It should be noted that certain (not
all) medical aids will refund, from savings, the cost to the member on
submission of a valid receipt from the pharmacy.
